Patternmaker
Style Vises
Patternmakers vises are considered the holy grail of workbench
vises. What makes them unique is that they can rotate in any
direction and the jaws pivot. These features are especially
important for patternmakers, the highly skilled woodworkers
that make incredibly accurate patterns out of wood for use
in manufacturing. The Emmert is often considered the best
vise ever made. Unfortunately, the Emmert hasn't been made
for a long time. But, there are parts available, and sometimes
used ones can be found. Today there are only a few patternmakers
style vises made: a very expensive new one for the few actual
patternmakers out there, the Tucker Vise and an imported one.
The
Emmert Vise page
The great classic patternmaker's vise.. Here's a link
to original information.

Lots of details on the vise including type studies anatomy,
serial number info, many photos, etc. If you're looking for
details this site is very helpful.
Mounting
an Emmert Vise
An unusual vise has special mounting instructions. Here's
the original plans.
The
Tucker Vise
Available exclusively through Lee Valley, this is a modern
version of the Emmert Vise. This is what I used on my bench.
Expensive, but worth it if you want a top quality pattern
maker vise.
Used
Emmert Vises, parts and more...
William Kerfoot sells used patternmakers vises and will
soon manufacture his own. He keeps a dozen or more Emmert patternmakers
vises in stock, ($450-$800), as well as 3 new Kindt-Collins,
($2000). He manufactures replacement parts for Emmerts also.

Imported
Patternmaker's Vise
Available through several suppliers including Woodcraft,
this is a less expensive way to go if you can't afford an
Emmert of Tucker. The quality seems to be improving all the
time. Here's the
link.
German
Vise Hardware
Toolmaker Lie-Nielsen now offers excellent bench hardware.
Yes, it is more expensive, but it is the best. Made in Germany
by a small firm that’s been in business since 1882.
Heavy castings, large screws, precise machining. For those
planning on building their own vises, there's none better.
Quick
Release Shoulder Vise A quarter turn releases the
vise and it's free to move. A great time saver. Vise has a
very large opening.
Chain
Drive Shoulder Vise A Heavy duty end vise: Chain drive
equalizes clamping pressure. Opens 71⁄4 inches.
Scandanavian
Shoulder Vise Screw For a Scandinavian-style Shoulder
vise. Can also be used to make a veneer press.
Small
Welded Tail Vise Rugged hardware for a traditional
tail vise. Use on a small bench. Excellent for using the Nelson
method of constructing a tail vise as outlined in the Workbench
Book.
Large
Welded Tail Vise This is a beautiful piece of hardware
for a full-size bench tail vise. It's what I used on my own
Workbench 2.0.

WaldMann
Round Dogs These are the short round dogs that are
3/4" in diameter.
WaldMann
Square Dogs A medium size square dogs with a steel
spring. This is the one I use on my bench when I need a little
more holding power.
Metal

spring via Lie-Nielsen. Make sure you match the dog size to
your dog holes. In other words, buy the dogs first, then build
the bench.
Wooden
Dogs You need the strength of metal bench dogs sometimes,
but wood dogs are much easier on your tools. Measure carefully.
WaldMann
